Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montréal knocked it out of the part in showing audiences how Croft went from a young and inexperienced adventurer to the hardened and versatile gunslinger we know and love. Shadow at least has some character development, and an enemy faction that you don’t interact with solely with arrows. The Tomb Raider reboot trilogy was an extremely interesting and fun dive into the formative years of legendary treasure hunter and survivalist Lara Croft. The plot is kinda hokie but what Tomb Raider plot isn’t? A Sun Queen who controls the weather and has zombie samurai guardians is just as far out there as the Mayan Apocalypse mythos. 2013 Lara was cool but a bit of a Mary Sue.

Jonah finally gives her the tough love she’s needed since Rise. Shadow’s story at least makes Lara face moral consequences for her obsessive single-minded “I have to do this my way, fuck everyone else” attitude. 2013 just had too many scripted shooting arenas and too few tombs. At least Rise gave you more options for stealth and more verticality to reposition, and thankfully Shadow did that even more. The only challenge in 2013 are the shitty camera in combat and the outdated, Xbox 360-era level design of “just throw waves and waves of suicidal enemies at the player and spam grenades” shooting galleries.ģrd person cover shooters are a dime a dozen, and TR2013 was trying to add to the pile. It’s a good game but most TR fans expect some awesome death trap puzzles to provide challenge. And those are optional? Like seriously wtf. 8 tiny tombs that I completed in 2 minutes without using her “survivor vision” once. Shadow takes the enhancements to gameplay from Rise and goes a step further, so if you just want cutscenes, QTE’s, and shooting galleries, it ain’t for you.Ģ013 story is good but it’s barely a Tomb Raider game.

I’m not a fan of a lot of those last-Gen mechanics, personally. I fucking hated the QTEs in 2013, so that game loses points from me for all of those. Rise added a ton more mechanical depth to stealth, combat, and traversal, had a faction to interact with and get side quests from, better gear and skill upgrades, and more puzzles, more elaborate and difficult puzzles as well. There was barely a stealth mechanic aside from “kill them before you’re seen” and the shooting galleries got repetitive and stale. I don’t think I ever used the “survivor vision” to do them. It was very linear and only had 8 tiny tombs that had no real hazards, and those were optional. The theme of TR games is uncovering ancient mysteries, but the core GAMEPLAY is exploration, puzzles, and combat, and TR2013 only had much of the latter. If you think 2013 had enough puzzles to justify calling it a Tomb Raider game, then we definitely disagree. And sure, Rise had that, but I felt like the flow of information to the player wasn't really all that smooth, it was more like "here's an old story, now you know the bad guy's motivation" in the first 30 minutes of the game. I'm told Shadow is great though, I'll have to play it when I get a new console.ĮDIT: and I'd say a core characteristic of Tomb Raider is the unraveling of ancient mysteries. I'm sure Rise was similar but I just never felt compelled to play it. TR 2013 had puzzles, like all those times you had to play with the wind, or find the way to that pilot, or all the tombs, or the whole return to the endurance, etc., etc. Although, to be fair, I did not finish the game. I loved the exploration and puzzles in every other Tomb Raider game, but is there really much of it in Rise? It started off strong with Syria where I thought "oh they're really going for the puzzles in this one" and then it was just like 2013 but without the intriguing story. I didn't care what happened in Rise, I felt it was just "let's find a way to put Lara in the same situation as the last game and we'll see how we get to the rest of the story" it felt like it was trying to be as mysterious as 2013 with its story but it never really clicked with me.
